Population Growth in Azerbaijan to Slow in the First Half of 2024

As of July 2024, the population of Azerbaijan reached 10,200,013 people, an increase of 19,243 from the beginning of the year, according to official data. This 0.2 percent growth reflects a stable yet modest rise, with the population density now standing at 118 people per square kilometer.

The demographic composition of Azerbaijan remains largely unchanged: 54.5% of residents live in urban areas, while 45.5% reside in rural regions. The gender distribution remains nearly equal, with women making up 50.2% of the population and men 49.8%. Notably, there are now 1,009 men for every 1,000 women.

In the first six months of 2024, the country registered 48,702 newborns, equating to 9.6 births per 1,000 people. Of these births, boys accounted for 53.2 percent and girls for 46.8 percent. Multiple births were notable: 1,622 twins, 72 triplets, and four sets of quadruplets were recorded.

Despite the steady birth rate, marriage trends are shifting. The number of marriages fell slightly from 4.8 per 1,000 people in the first half of 2023 to 4.4 in 2024, with 22,250 unions registered. Divorces remained consistent at 2.1 per 1,000 people, with 10,430 marriages dissolved during the same period.
